If a Patient Tells You What They Are Experiencing, Believe Them the First Time

Understanding the Cell Danger Response (CDR) and Complex Chronic Illnesses

In today’s fast-paced healthcare system, patients with complex chronic illnesses often find themselves caught in a frustrating cycle of referrals, tests, and dismissive diagnoses. Many are passed from specialist to specialist, each focusing narrowly on their own field without taking the time to look at the patient’s health holistically. This fragmented approach can lead to a heartbreaking experience where patients are not believed, their symptoms are minimized, or worse, they are told that their suffering is "all in their heads."

Chronic Activation of the Cell Danger Response (CDR)

One of the key concepts in understanding complex chronic illnesses is the Cell Danger Response (CDR). This is a natural cellular reaction to environmental threats such as infections, toxins, or even psychological stress. The CDR is a protective mechanism where cells essentially go into a kind of “low power mode” to conserve energy and protect the body from further harm. While this response is essential for survival in acute situations, problems arise when the CDR is chronically activated. This can lead to a wide array of symptoms that are difficult to pinpoint and even harder to treat, especially when each symptom is considered in isolation. (1)

The Complexity Environmental Illness

Environmental illness adds another layer of complexity. Patients with conditions like mold toxicity, chemical sensitivities, or heavy metal exposure can suffer from debilitating symptoms that are often misunderstood or overlooked by conventional medicine. These patients can easily fall through the cracks of the healthcare system because their symptoms do not fit neatly into the traditional diagnostic criteria of any one specialty.

Valuing Your Experience of Your Own Body

At the Portland Clinic of Natural Health, we understand that the patient’s experience is at the heart of healing. We take every symptom seriously and believe our patients when they tell us what they are going through. We specialize in treating complex chronic illnesses and environmental illnesses by taking a holistic, naturopathic, and functional medicine approach. We look at the whole person, not just the symptoms, and work to identify and address the underlying causes of illness.

Careful Listening and Personalized Treatments

Our approach involves listening carefully to our patients, running comprehensive tests to uncover hidden imbalances, and creating personalized treatment plans that support the body’s natural healing processes. We recognize that every patient’s journey is unique and that their symptoms are real, not just something that can be dismissed.

Patients with complex chronic conditions often feel isolated and misunderstood. It’s crucial for healthcare providers to believe them the first time they speak up. By doing so, we can offer them the support and care they need to navigate their health challenges and start their journey toward recovery.

At the Portland Clinic of Natural Health, we are committed to standing by our patients every step of the way, offering them the comprehensive, compassionate care they deserve.
