Uncovering Hidden Causes of Dysautonomia: The Role of Environmental Toxicants

Dysautonomia, an umbrella term for disorders of the autonomic nervous system (ANS)—is on the rise, yet often misdiagnosed or misunderstood. Patients may present with lightheadedness, heart palpitations, digestive issues, temperature dysregulation, and chronic fatigue, only to be told it's “all in their head.” But what if potential root causes or multifactorial mediators can be identified in order to help symptoms improve?

Emerging research suggests that environmental toxicants—like mold toxins, heavy metals, pesticides, and VOCs (volatile organic compounds)—may be significant, underrecognized drivers of dysautonomia.

What is Dysautonomia?

Dysautonomia refers to a dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system, which controls involuntary processes like heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, and temperature regulation. Conditions such as Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), orthostatic hypotension, and neurocardiogenic syncope fall under this category.

Symptoms can be debilitating, including:

  • Tachycardia or bradycardia

Hidden Root Causes of Dysautonomia

1. Environmental Toxicants

Chronic exposure to mold/mycotoxins, heavy metals (like mercury or lead), organophosphates, or formaldehyde from building materials can disrupt the nervous system. These toxicants often breach the blood-brain barrier, activating neuroinflammation through immune cells like microglia.

This inflammatory response triggers the release of cytokines—chemical messengers such as IL-6, TNF-α, and IL-1β—which dysregulate both the immune system and the autonomic nervous system. The result is a system stuck in overdrive or collapse, classic dysautonomic symptoms.

2. Mast Cell Activation and Histamine Intolerance

Many patients with dysautonomia also show signs of mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS), where the immune system releases histamine and inflammatory mediators in response to triggers like chemical exposure, heat, or even stress. This constant state of reactivity can further dysregulate the ANS.

3. Chronic Infections and Inflammation

Persistent infections—Lyme disease, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), Mycoplasma, or even long COVID, can keep the immune system in a chronic state of activation, driving further neuroimmune dysregulation and exacerbating symptoms of dysautonomia.

4. Toxic Load and Genetic Susceptibility

People with MTHFR gene variants or impaired glutathione production may not detox efficiently, causing bioaccumulation of toxins that directly impact the nervous system. When the body’s ability to clear environmental stressors is compromised, symptoms like fatigue, dizziness, GI upset, and brain fog often follow.

Supporting the Body’s Healing

Addressing dysautonomia often requires a root-cause approach that goes beyond symptom management:

  • Environmental detox: Identify and eliminate mold or chemical exposure.
  • Nervous system support: Vagal nerve stimulation, adaptogens, and gentle exercise.
  • Immune modulation: Treat underlying infections, support mast cell balance.
  • Targeted supplementation: Antioxidants (like glutathione), mitochondrial support, and minerals.
  • Genetic testing: To evaluate detox pathways and tailor treatment.

Final Thoughts

Dysautonomia is rarely “just” a nervous system issue. It’s often a canary in the coal mine, signaling deeper hidden imbalances, particularly from environmental toxicants and chronic inflammation. By identifying and addressing these root causes, many patients experience significant improvements in quality of life.
