Zearalenone and the Hormone System: When Mold Disrupts the Body’s Natural Balance

Zearalenone (ZEN) is a potent mycotoxin produced primarily by Fusarium species, molds that can commonly contaminate grains such as corn, wheat, and barley, but are also known to colonize the microbiome as fungal overgrowth. While often discussed in the context of food spoilage or agricultural loss, ZEN’s more insidious impact is on the human endocrine system. Acting as a xenoestrogen, ZEN mimics natural estrogens by binding to estrogen receptors, leading to hormonal confusion within the body. (1, 2)

How Zearalenone Disrupts Hormones

ZEN’s structural similarity to estradiol allows it to interfere with normal hormonal signaling.
